Hieronymus Bosch and Eve Wood 16th century sees 21st century

Eve Wood "Bird with Hoodie" 2014
graphite, gouche

detail of the Garden of Earthly Delights
by Bosch

-Bosch (1450-1516) Netherlands
-Fantastic imagery, illustration of moral and religious concepts and narratives

Europe
-in Spain he is known as "El Bosco", The Garden of Earthly Delights is on exhibit at the Prado Museum in Madrid Spain.
-One of Bosch's most famous works.
-3 part altar piece : The name from the beautiful garden in the center filled with birds, flowers and nudes.
-It also depicts the history of the world and the progression of sin.
-The outside shows the begin of creation-to Adam and Eve and the original sin on the left panel to the torments of hell, darkness, icy, nightmare visions.
-The center illustrates the world engaged in sinful pleasures.
-The work was probably created for the private collection of a noble family.
-dates are not exact- the pineapple postdates Columbus early exploration to the Americas.

Artist, poet, and writer
Education:
l996 University of Irvine, MFA in English/Creative Writing
l994 California Institute of the Arts, MFA in Visual Art
l992 Califorina Institute of the Arts, BFA in Visual Arts

-2014 One of Eve Wood's current series is "birds with hoodies"
-The watercolors are a humorous, whimsical, and lyrical approach to portraying animals.
-Wood often includes animals in her paintings and drawings.  In another series the birds are portrayed as invasive and harmful creatures. (nature vs. man)

Bosch (Paradise)

Eve Wood (Foxes)

"Assuming Eve Wood was inspired by Bosch's "The Garden of Earthly Delights":
1. How does Wood's painting of a "band of foxes" correlate to Bosch's panel depicting paradise?
(hint: color, placement, fluidity of paint, paint's application),

2. What do you think about when you see animals dressed in human clothing or behaving/having the characteristics of a human being? (refer to the image below from Bosch's painting in which the bird-like creature (who is devouring a human) while portraying a creature of authority on a make-shift throne with a pot as a crown. ) (Wood's "Rooster with Hoodie"-)

3. Wood's "Hoodie Series" has humorous and whimsical notions combined with elements of uneasiness and "discomfort" displayed by some of the birds.  In her other bird series in which man's hands and arms are combined with birds causing/or being part of painful acts, there seems to be a relationship with Bosch's portrayal of hell and sinful acts.  How are acts of pain, fear, isolation exist in both artists' works?
